Could be worth trying to screw it in further (don't force anything!) or failing that contacting SME for a replacement screw, perhaps you have the wrong part in there.Custom Bronze SME 30 & Series III P1 Spacer Plate AdapterĪfter four years of research & development we are extremely proud to release our own version of the SME P1 Spacer. Hi, that sounds wrong to me, the azimuth screw should not extend below the locking collar. I use the headshell that came with the arm. The azimuth locking screw on my arm protrudes about 5mm below the armtube clearing the locking collar for the headshell by about 2mm. I did consider a spacer for the arm but I already had the correct VTA. The only headshell that has needed a cartridge spacer has been the AT-LH 'Technihard' type, unless you're playing some insanely warped records :shock. Have used various 103's in my M2-12R with a variety of headshells over the last three years. R-E-M wrote:With a t/t like the 401 you should use a spacer like the SME P1 under the tonearm base but it looks like the Thorens would not need one. Ps: no spacer is needed for the Dynavector. They are both low output and I run them through a 10:1 step up transformer and a Graham Slee Reflex M phono stage. So, both cartridges work well hanging off the SME.

This cartridge imparts nuances that the Denon can't match and I miss the seven o'clock news on tv most nights now. The Dynavector has been in residence for only a couple of months and what can I say? It's three times the price, surface noise is greatly reduced, bass is more extended and the upper frequencies are more detailed in a good way. The Denon is noted for not having extended bass or treble definition but this does not matter and the price is very reasonable. Across the frequency band there is a good presentation that allows the playing of records all day without tiring of it all. The latter is probably due to the conical stylus. With the Denon fitted tracking was excellent and no sibilance.

How does it all sound? The arm being longer has less tracking error and to me a smoothness is imparted to the sound and to me benefits all music I play. Last December I replaced the Denon with a Dynavector 20x2L (xmas came early). I used shaped piece of 1.6mm thick circuit board. This cartridge is not very tall and needed a spacer otherwise the azimuth locking screw will catch the surface of warped records. I use that arm with a Garrard 401 and have used two cartridges so far.
